What fishing material do I use

Rods

I have lots of stuff including rods to fish with, from very cheap second hand rods untill some recent handbuilt rods. Carpfishing for me means not only the static way of fishing, but also very active fishing with floaters and so on. Besides, I expect the material to be able to land the fish I caught, and I must trust it all. Else, I donot fish with it. Plus it should be able to be used for years and years.

As I already explained, I started Carpfishig long time ago sometimes with less succes than usual. Of late years, I have been fishing rivers nearby and sometimes big water (>100 hectares), including fishing in France (see for the articles else on this website).

Floater fishing

I use 1.5 lb rod (12 ft) for floaterfishing which is handbuilt and a 1 3/8 Bruce and Walker Rini Groothuis glass rod of 11 ft, which is reacently re-built. This rod is already 20 years old, but still offers everything you when you're floaterfishing: fun! The father in-law of a fishing friend of mine rebuilt it and only left the cork intact. The black finish is off now and the brown colour of the blank is shown now. The rod looks so beautiful, I hardly dare to use it anymore.....

The Name Rini Groothuis cannot be found on the blank anymore, but that doesn't matter to me. These days I specially use this rod for catching Grass Carp.

As you see I prefer handbuilt rods. The only reason is, that I look for a blank that matches my high standards.

Boilie fishing rods

The rods I usually use for fishing with boilies are more heavy than my floater fishing rods. They need to be heavier, as I prefer fishing near obstacles on rivers and very large lakes. I think it is great to be able to catch a fish on the rivers nearby. These rods need a heavy body, and my rods still do their work right! One set of rods were already handbuilt about 13 years ago by the Fishing shop "De Hengelsportreus", in thos time still in Gaanderen. Nowadays they have a larger shop in Drempt. The blanks are the famous Diamond Kevlar blanks, 2.25 lb finished with cork and SIC. The SIC are still ok, even though I want to have them replaced as soon as I have enough money to have the rods rebuilt again.

Some people think the rods are too stiff, but I can assure you, the rod bends perfectly! I even used them for short distances, fishing only 10 meters from where I sat in my chair. Recently I used them with 120 grams of lead in France (seine). The rods had little problem to throw that load 90 meters away.

Searching for new rods

As the Diamond Kevlar blanks grow older, I decided to find other blanks which I can use for long and middle long distances, meaning a heavy duty rod. They should be able to handle 140 grams because of river fishing and large lake fishing (also in France) and it should be parabolic. Since I met some English guys in France while fishing in la Carriere, I was stumled by the rods they were using. The harrison blanks are (hardly) known in Holland, but I found out that some shops, like Vlemmix (www.vlemmix.com) sells them, handbuilt, or just the blanks. I preferred 3.5 lb blanks only, as I found them excellent rods and i had "my own" man to build them: Ron Peuyn from Ron Peuyn's Rods&Products in Rheden, Holland.

The rods are excellent handbuilt now with cork, sic, and it handles 140 grams without a problem. The length is 12.5 ft and they are beauties!

Searching someone to build them

I spent years for finding someone to build my new rods. I found someone who rebuilt my old Bruce and Walker rod, bu he quit a few years ago. The moment I found a new man to build my new rods, I started to make plans to buy the Harrison blanks in Vlemmix. My curiosity grew some time ago when I saw a small advertisemnet from Ron Peuyns Rods&Products. I decided to habve look and talked with him some hours about building some rods for me. He showed me some rods he built for other people, some were carp rods, other ones where feeders, and so on. They all looked perfect. My decision was made: he had to build my rods!

builds them with love, and every piece is a piece of art, I ca assure you that! You can decide to use specially made cones, so you always recognize rods that are built by Ron. Your rods are therefore always different to other's , but more important is: he builds them secure and the way I want it.
